Critical Conversations

The Independence Captured podcast

A new feature…

In recent times, Independence Captured has explored the class dynamics around the Holyrood election, offered a wider appraisal of the extractive relationship between the SNP and the independence movement against the backdrop of the embezzlement scandal, carried an extensive interview on the crisis in Scottish universities, and published a long read on Scottish nationalism in the context of a changing world order.

It struck me that the articles open up wider themes which don’t make it onto the page. Therefore, to deepen the discussion and bring in other points of view, a new podcast will complement the written pieces.

The idea is to debate and dissect the issues brought up in the newsletter with a variety of guests. From challenging corporate power, to critiquing the SNP leadership’s independence strategy, to assessing the impact of the end of the unipolar order on domestic politics.

The independence movement emerged from a profound democratic impulse. Yet many of the institutions and ideas that now dominate Scottish public life are rarely subjected to sustained examination and are disconnected from mass politics.

Critical Conversations will create a space for readers who want to delve further into these topics. This is an exclusive feature for paid subscribers.

The first episode will be published on Monday 8th June.
