What!? We can only restore Scotland's independence with the approval of the European Commission, NATO and the White House now!? It was bad enough that we had to satisfy the British ruling elite of our worthiness. Now we have this lot to contend with as well!
Alternatively, we can go our own way and just deal with the foibles, whims and tantrums of the 'major powers' on a day-to-day basis like everybody else does.
A difficult read in that it is both intellectually challenging and a stark descriptor of current reality.
One area of the SNP's current state which needs to be put under the microscope is the make up, role and power of the NEC.
This power structure has caused a disconnect between the ordinary members (who were the decision makers) and the elected members in WM and Holyrood. The resignation of several high profile members in recent times seems to have gone largely uninvestigated. Why?
Thanks for a very interesting piece that helps me better understand the desire to breakaway from the U.K. and I am desperately trying to understand the positives and negatives of such a move. I’m not a fan of the break up the U.K. idea but have studied the subject enough to believe that with better less power hungry politicians Scotland has the natural resources and industries to succeed as a state. But these hides the fact that over 60% voted against such a move only a few years ago and as you said almost 40% of the old yes voters are now in doubt. So where are the arguments for taking the big money from the U.K. government and just getting in with building independence as a mindset and building the industries instead of just breaking things up? The Scottish government have a duty to the people to state the case for both sides of the argument for all the residents of Scotland so that the people can make an informed choice. A possibly naive point I admit as power corrupts ideals as we have seen with Salmond and Sturgeon and probably whomever succeeds. Thank you again for your very interesting piece

well written but too broad for me, the devil is in the detail
A fascinating, incisive and enlightening piece, as ever. Thanks Jonathon!
