In our work for the SDG goals, international treaty support and for human rights at the UN level, the clearer it seems to us that Scotland's cultural, aspirational and political identity can and does impact on the international and transnational order that still exists at some level, despite US hegemony and European colonialism. It's the despots and their efforts to delegitimize any of the well-evidenced global desire for co operative action on climate change, energy needs, food security, human migration and a new economy that is not dependent on imbalance and weaponised conflict. Its not populations that want to be war ready, or to invade territories, nor even even the corporations and asset management firms that drive these behaviours, but the ever-expanding Nation States leaders who are neither accountable to, nor accountable for the resourcing of stable, well-funded institutions, They are not acting on their responsibilities for the welfare and resilience. of their own citizens. There is a great deal that Scotland should expect and even demand of its own Scottish Government, and a great deal that Scottish people can contribute to and advocate for in the transnational order, whatever its position with regard to self determination. The potential for change is not absolute, but is far beyond any definition of any 'national' identity, the lack of which which is not always the impediment to making valuable changes. The more that we can all do actively for peaceful and sustainable change by all governments, the better the Scotland and the world that we will be able to live in.

Another brilliant but gloomy piece. Thank you. I find a contradiction though in you saying that US power is waning globally when it is asserting itself so terrifyingly in Europe and the Americas. The brilliant Delta force ‘extraction’ was unmatched for its demonstration of naked power. A huge embarrassment to Putin whose tanks ran out of fuel within a few miles of Kiev in 2022 in his failed attempt to ‘extract’ Zelensky which is no further forward four years on! Then there is US tech power and its tentacles which Carol Cadwalldr has been writing about extensively, its ability to control information and distort information and twist minds.
